Saudi Arabia Gears Up for Global Energy Spotlight with First-Ever Hackathon

The big picture: Saudi Arabia is opening its first Energy Hackathon, a three-day innovation sprint in Riyadh. It lands just days before the Kingdom hosts the 25th World Petroleum Congress (WPC) Energy Congress. Together, the two events show how far Saudi Arabia has come in reshaping its energy sector.

Organizers built it around the theme “Ignite Your Ideas.” It runs between 7–9 October, 2026, at the King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center (KAPSARC) in Riyadh.

What is happening: Specifically, participants will address six distinct challenges across three focused tracks:

  • Intelligent Control: Specialists will create tools to predict grid failures and manage heavy electricity loads.

Participants will join technical workshops and specialized mentoring sessions with industry leaders before constructing working prototypes. Moreover, organizers will offer structured post-event entrepreneurial support to launch winning projects beyond the prototype stage into commercial markets.

Between the lines: Saudi Arabia actively positions its young population at the center of its modern economic evolution. By connecting local youth directly with industrial pioneers, the Ministry creates direct channels for commercial technology application. Consequently, these forward-looking programs build local intellectual property, create high-value technical jobs, and strengthen national energy supply chains for future generations.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia advances a massive clean energy transition through unprecedented public investments and structural reforms. The Kingdom systematically shifts domestic power generation away from liquid fuels toward solar energy, wind power, and high-efficiency natural gas. Consequently, this bold strategy preserves valuable crude oil for international export markets while reducing national carbon emissions substantially.

Furthermore, the Kingdom sets global cost benchmarks for utility-scale clean energy production. Through competitive auctions, the National Renewable Energy Program consistently secures low solar tariffs. Additionally, Saudi Arabia expands landmark mega-projects nationwide, including the historic SAR 31.5 billion ($8.4 billion USD) NEOM Green Hydrogen Project to export green ammonia globally.

Saudi Renewable Energy Milestones

By the numbers: Saudi Arabia’s renewable energy push has accelerated sharply over the past two years:

  • 8 GW of renewable capacity is online as of August 2026, up from 2.7 GW in 2023, putting the Kingdom on track for 20 GW by year-end.
  • 14 GW: the amount of new solar and wind capacity Saudi Arabia will award in 2026 through the National Renewable Energy Program’s Round 7 tenders.
  • 130 GW is the Kingdom’s headline 2030 renewable target, 58.7 GW from solar and 40 GW from wind, enough to supply roughly half the country’s electricity.
  • SR135 billion ($36 billion): the sum the Kingdom has committed under the National Hydrogen Strategy through 2030, targeting 4 million tonnes of hydrogen output yearly.
  • 6 GW: the capacity of the Al-Shuaibah solar plant, among the world’s largest.
  • 400 MW: the Dumat Al-Jandal wind farm, which powers roughly 70,000 households and cuts about 988,000 tonnes of CO2 a year.
  • Renewable energy and natural gas will each supply 50 percent of national electricity by 2030.
  • The Ministry plans 48 gigawatt-hours of battery energy storage systems by 2030 to maintain total grid stability.
  • The Public Investment Fund committed SAR 31 billion ($8.3 billion) to develop 15 gigawatts of solar power projects.
  • Saudi Arabia has directed over SAR 1.5 trillion ($400 billion) into sustainable energy initiatives under Vision 2030.

Registration opened on 19 August, 2026, through the official public portal at hackathon.moenergy.gov.sa. Interested applicants must submit their innovative project ideas before registration officially closes on 16 September, 2026.

Finally, officials will honor the hackathon winners during a closing ceremony on the final day of the WPC Energy Congress. The event takes place at the Riyadh Front Exhibition & Conference Center. Ultimately, this milestone initiative equips young Saudi innovators to shape the sustainable global energy future.
