Syria to Take Part in G7 Summit as Guest Nation

Syria will take part in next month’s G7 Summit in France as a guest nation, with President Ahmed Al-Sharaa expected to represent his country, according to three sources familiar with the matter, Reuters reported.

Al-Sharaa’s attendance will mark Damascus’ first participation in a G7 gathering since the forum’s establishment in 1975.

Officials have delivered an invitation for Al-Sharaa to attend the June 15–17 summit in Évian-les-Bains, southeastern France, directly to Syrian Finance Minister Yisr Barnieh, who was already in Paris taking part in the group’s financial talks earlier this week.

The source affirmed that Damascus’ participation in the G7 Summit would likely concentrate on positioning the country as a “potential strategic hub for supply chains,” particularly amid the disruptions linked to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

On February 28, the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran, targeting its leadership and triggering a new conflict in the Middle East.

Iran has been responding with a retaliatory counterattack in Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi as a retaliatory move, while launching barrages of missiles and drones toward Israel.

The conflict has spread across the Middle East, leaving thousands dead, triggering unprecedented disruptions to energy supplies especially after the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.

The adversaries remain locked in a standoff over the Strait of Hormuz, as Iran tightens its control over maritime traffic while the United States continues to enforce a blockade on Iranian ports.
