Syrian President Ahmad Al-Sharaa held important talks on Thursday with Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) commander Mazloum Abdi and Kurdish politician Ilham Ahmad to discuss the implementation of the January 29 agreement, according to Arab News.
The meeting came at a crucial moment as thousands of Kurdish residents in northeastern Syria continued to submit citizenship applications in the cities of Qamishli and Hasakeh, following the agreement between Damascus and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
It was also attended by Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan Al-Shaibani and presidential envoy Ziad al-Ayesh.
In January, Al-Sharaa issued a decree granting Kurds the restoration of citizenship and officially recognizing their language as well as national holiday.
This move represented part of wider efforts to boost ties with the SDF, which had reached a deal with the government to integrate both militarily and administratively under the Syrian government.
The deal came after weeks of clashes between government forces and the SDF.
The Kurdish-led group had controlled northeastern Syria at the outset of the civil war in 2011 that tore Syria apart.
