Historic Breakthrough: Israel, Lebanon Agree to Direct Negotiations after US-Mediated Talks

Israel and Lebanon have agreed to launch direct negotiations following productive discussions in Washington, the United States announced Tuesday. This diplomatic breakthrough marks a significant, promising step toward de-escalating persistent tensions along their volatile, heavily contested shared border region.
State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott formally confirmed the agreement through an official statement released Tuesday afternoon in Washington. “The participants held productive discussions on steps toward launching direct negotiations between Israel and Lebanon,” he stated.
Consequently, all participating sides officially committed to beginning formal talks at a mutually agreed time and suitable venue. Moreover, Israeli and Lebanese envoys engaged in more than two hours of intensive negotiations, which Secretary of State Marco Rubio successfully mediated.
US Reaffirms Support for Lebanese Sovereignty
Pigott also highlighted Washington’s strong, unwavering endorsement of Lebanon’s ongoing, critical efforts to restore full state authority nationwide. “The United States congratulated the two countries on this historic milestone and expressed its support for further talks, and for the government of Lebanon’s plans to restore the monopoly of force and to end Iran’s overbearing influence,” Pigott said. Additionally, he emphasized that any future, sustainable ceasefire agreement must involve both governments negotiating directly together exclusively. And it “affirmed that any agreement to cease hostilities must be reached between the two governments, brokered by the United States, and not through any separate track,” he added.
Lebanon formally entered the expanding region-wide Iran conflict on 2 March after pro-Tehran Hezbollah launched coordinated, devastating attacks against Israel. Since that dangerous, rapid escalation, Israeli military operations have killed more than 2,000 people and displaced over one million civilians.
Furthermore, Israeli ground forces have advanced deep into southern Lebanon despite widespread, urgent international calls for an immediate, comprehensive ceasefire. Therefore, these newly announced, high-stakes negotiations represent a crucial, timely opportunity to halt ongoing violence and pursue lasting diplomatic solutions.
