Suicide Bombing in Central Baghdad, Kills 12
January 21, 2021
Security sources reported that 12 Iraqis were killed and 25 others were wounded, by the detonation of an explosive device and an explosive belt in the clothes market in the Eastern Gate in Baghdad this morning.
The sources said that two people blew themselves up asynchronously in a market selling military clothes in the Bab al-Sharqi area, in the center of the capital.
The Director of Baghdad operations, Brigadier General Hazem Al-Azzawi, said in the Iraqi News Agency (INA): “A double explosion occurred shortly before in Tayaran Square in Baghdad.”
The sources indicated that the Iraqi security forces were deployed in the Green Zone in central Baghdad, and the main gates leading to the area were closed.
Officials described the attack as a suicide bombing that–given the size of the explosive and its devastating impact–required a level of sophistication and planning not necessarily seen in assaults before now.
