Saudi National Center of Meteorology Issues Summer Climate Report

The National Center of Meteorology has issued a detailed summer climate forecast for June to August 2024 in the Kingdom.

The report indicated that this summer, most regions of the Kingdom may experience up to an 80% increase in average surface temperature. The increase will surpass the normal rate by up to two degrees.

The Saudi National Center of Meteorology forecasts increased rainfall across most of the Kingdom, particularly in July and August, with a 70% chance. Heavy rain is expected in Al-Baha, Asir, Jazan, Najran, and the highlands of Makkah.

The report forecasts temperature increases in July: up to two degrees in Hail, Al-Qassim, Al-Jawf, and the Northern Borders. In Riyadh and Sharqiya, temperatures are expected to rise by one and a half degrees.

The month of August will witness a possible rise in temperature rates, with a change from the average of up to two degrees in parts of the regions (Hail, the Northern Borders). The other areas (Riyadh, Al-Sharqiya, Medina, Tabuk) will experience a degree and a half. The centre expects the average change to reach one degree for the rest of the regions.

The report indicates the possibility of rainfall in all regions of the Kingdom in July at a higher than normal rate, with a chance of occurrence between 60-70%.

The Saudi National Center of Meteorology expects rainfall higher than normal in most regions of the Kingdom in August, with a chance of occurrence reaching 60%. Additionally, the other parts such as Makkah, Medina, and Eastern regions will witness average rainfall.

In June, July, and August, the Osiris High influences surface winds, extending over the west and northwest of the Kingdom. These winds blow northwest from the Mediterranean towards the Red Sea and the northern parts. Wind speeds decrease in the interior, southern regions.

The report emphasizes the importance of following semi-seasonal climate forecasts, weather forecasts, and early warnings from the National Center of Meteorology.
