The Saudi Film Nights tour has opened in Johannesburg, South Africa, bringing contemporary Saudi cinema to audiences across three major cities as part of the Saudi Film Commission’s efforts to expand the international reach of the Kingdom’s film industry and deepen cultural exchange through cinema.
Organized by the Saudi Film Commission, the tour is running in South Africa from October 8 to 14, 2026, following an earlier edition in Spain. It marks the commission’s first cinematic presentation in South Africa and includes screenings in Johannesburg, Durban, and Cape Town.
Four Saudi Films, Three Cities
The program features four contemporary Saudi productions: two feature films and two short films, accompanied by post-screening discussions with participating Saudi filmmakers.
The Johannesburg leg opened at the Lesedi Theatre within Joburg Theatre in Braamfontein, where Night Courier and Irtizaz were screened on October 8 and 9. The two short films explore different experiences and social pressures in Saudi society.
The tour then moved to Durban, where Siwar and First Funeral Day were scheduled to screen at the Drama Theatre in the Playhouse complex on October 11. The films address themes of family, identity, loss, and the personal transformations shaped by difficult circumstances.
The final stop is Cape Town’s historic Labia Theatre on October 14, where Siwar and First Funeral Day will close the South African program.
Expanding Saudi Cinema Globally
The Saudi Film Commission said the initiative reflects its broader strategy to strengthen the global presence of Saudi cinema and build cultural bridges through film. The selected venues are established destinations for international and arthouse cinema audiences, allowing Saudi productions to reach diverse viewers in South Africa.
The tour also highlights the rapid development of Saudi Arabia’s film sector, presenting stories rooted in Saudi experiences while engaging with universal themes such as family, relationships, work, social pressure, and loss.
By taking Saudi films to Johannesburg, Durban, and Cape Town, the commission aims to introduce international audiences to the diversity of contemporary Saudi filmmaking and support the Kingdom’s growing cultural presence on the global stage.
