Saudi Arabia to lift Kiswah of Kaaba in preparation for Hajj season

The General Presidency for Affairs of the Grand Mosque meeting took place yesterday with the participation of 37 Saudis. It arranged preventive measures, raising the lower part of the Kaaba’s covering by nearly three meters.

The raised part was covered on all four sides with a white cotton cloth about two meters wide, as is customary in preparation for this year’s Hajj season.

During his supervision and participation in raising the Kaaba’s garment, Dr Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais, the General President of the Grand Mosque’s Affairs, explained that raising the Kaaba’s curtain is carried out by a group of specialists from the King Abdulaziz Complex.

The process entails folding the Kaaba’s curtain, which is covered with a piece of black silk embroidered with verses from the Noble Qur’an, up to protect it from tampering and allowing travellers to view the Kaaba’s curtains up, as tradition.

The Kaaba curtains were raised in the old days; the white colour was used to announce the entry of Hajj. It was the only means to protect the covering during the season.
