Saudi Arabia, Somalia Seal Maritime Pact to Boost Red Sea Stability

Saudi Arabia and Somalia established a landmark cooperation agreement on Friday focused on port development and maritime transport infrastructure. This strategic partnership aims to enhance economic relations between the two nations while reinforcing collaborative security along critical trade routes.

The Minister of Transport and Logistics Services, Eng. Saleh bin Nasser Al-Jasser, joined Somalia’s Minister of Ports, Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, to formalize the accord. This comprehensive agreement encompasses port development, export promotion, and investment opportunities to facilitate increased cooperation in maritime infrastructure and related economic sectors.

Furthermore, the deal aligns perfectly with the Saudi Cabinet’s recent push for international transport partnerships and regional stability initiatives. Consequently, both nations expect this framework to modernize port facilities and significantly enhance operational efficiency across the Horn of Africa.

Strategic Goals and Technical Exchange

Officials described the accord as a formal framework for long-term cooperation in logistics and maritime transport services. According to a joint statement, the agreement also includes provisions for capacity building to enhance the technical skills of Somali professionals.

“The partnership reflects the deepening of fraternal relations between Mogadishu and Riyadh,” Minister Nur stated following the signing ceremony, adding that the agreement reinforces Saudi Arabia’s role as a strategic partner in safeguarding Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

This economic agreement extends upon the rapidly growing diplomatic ties between the two countries, which recently signed a major security pact. The new partnership aligns with Somalia’s blue economy strategy to bolster regional connectivity and facilitate seamless trade across East Africa.

Moreover, the maritime corridor linking the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden remains one of the world’s most critical routes. Therefore, the Saudi government continues to expand its engagement in the region to focus on trade, infrastructure, and maritime stability.
