Saudi Arabia Says Talks With Iran Are at ‘Exploratory Stage’

Saudi Minister of Foreign Affairs Prince Faisal bin Farhan stated after a meeting with EU Commissioner for External Relations Josep Borrell that “the relations between the Kingdom and the EU are deep and historic,” adding that ” the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 were reviewed” during the meeting.

Saudi Arabia is holding a “conversation with the US over the conflict in Yemen,” according to Prince Faisal bin Farhan, who also acknowledged to Borrell “the seriousness of the Houthi militia’s tactics in Yemen.”

“We are very worried by Iranian breaches, which contradict Iran’s assurances of the benign nature of its nuclear program,” the foreign minister said of the Iranian issue.

“The negotiations with Iran are still in an exploratory stage,” the Saudi foreign minister stated adding that “The Saudi-Iranian talks will establish a foundation for addressing the lingering concerns between the two sides, and we will endeavor to achieve that,” he added.

“Saudi Arabia is the Union’s greatest strategic partner,” Borrell said, adding, “I discussed the situation in Yemen and Iran’s nuclear file in Saudi Arabia.”

The EU supports the Kingdom’s efforts to end the crisis in Yemen,” Borrell added. He said, “We are applying pressure for a ceasefire in Yemen and a halt to attacks on Saudi Arabia,” stressing that Houthi attacks on the kingdom violate international laws.

Borrell began his visit to the Kingdom by meeting with Nayef Falah Mubarak Al-Hajraf, Secretary-General of the GCC, and stated in a tweet posted on his official Twitter account that the meeting aims to make the European Union’s partnership with the GCC more strategic, as well as to work together on stability in the region.
