PIF’s Governor, Yasir Al-Rumayyan, among TIME100 AI List 2024

TIME Magazine has recently unveiled its ‘TIME100 Most Influential People in AI 2024’ list which features prominent industry leaders from around the globe.

Governor of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), Yasir Al-Rumayyan, has secured a place among the 100 most influential people in artificial intelligence for 2024.

Al-Rumayyan has been the governor of PIF since 2017.

In 2019, he became the chairman of Saudi Aramco, the world’s biggest oil company.

He became a member of the company’s board of directors in 2016.

In 2015, he was an adviser to the Royal Court, a board member at the US transportation network company Uber Technologies Inc., and the Japanese multinational SoftBank Group.

Al-Rumayyan has spent nearly a decade attempting to push the fund into tech, beginning with a $3.5 billion investment in Uber in 2016.

Currently, the PIF reportedly plans to create a $40 billion fund for investing in AI and possibly to collaborate with venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz. This fund will transform Saudi Arabia into one of the largest state-funders of AI.

“We are fairly well positioned to be an AI hub outside of the US,” the PIF’s governor, Yasir al-Rumayyan, said last February, citing the country’s funding capacity and energy resources.
