The State of Palestine on Tuesday welcomed the UN Security Council’s adoption of a draft resolution proposed by Washington supporting US President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace plan to end the war, according to Arab News.
Palestinian Authority Welcomes Resolution
Palestine said that the move emphasized the Palestinians’ rights to self-determination and an independent sovereign state.
It also labeled the resolution as a significant step toward reaching a permanent and comprehensive ceasefire and ensuring smooth delivery of humanitarian aid.
Moreover, Palestinian officials called for the immediate implementation of the resolution, underscoring the dire need to restore normal life in Gaza after the two-year war, prevent displacement and ensure the full withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Palestinian enclave.
Meanwhile, they noted that the resolution must back reconstruction efforts, implement the two-state solution and halt any attempt at annexation.
The statement also expressed the Palestinian State’s readiness to collaborate with the US administration, Security Council members, Arab and Islamic countries, the European Union, the United Nations and all partners involved in the New York Declaration.
In this context, officials affirmed that such cooperation is crucial to putting an end to the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza, the West Bank, as well as East Jerusalem. It will also create a political path toward a just and lasting peace based on international law and the two-state framework.
The State of Palestine also said it remains ready to take on full responsibilities in the Gaza Strip as part of a unified Palestinian state.
Hamas Reaction
The Palestinian group Hamas has dismissed the resolution, criticizing the lack of respect to Palestinians’ rights and demands.
The Security Council’s resolution “does not meet the level of our Palestinian people’s political and humanitarian demands and rights,” Hamas said in a statement.
“The resolution imposes an international guardianship over Gaza and promote a vision biased toward the occupation, which our people, its forces, and its constituent groups reject,” the statement noted.
The group has also expressed rejection to the resolution, describing it as an attempt to impose an international mandate on Gaza.
Therefore, Hamas and the Palestinian factions said that the International Stabilization Force (ISF) in Gaza must exclude Israeli forces from taking part. Moreover, the ISF should be supervised directly by the UN. The group also rejected any attempt to include the disarmament of Hamas in the resolution.
