Neom has embarked on an ambitious undertaking; it has inked a substantial contract with the Italian contractor WeBuild for building Lake Trojina Dams.
This contract, valued at around 20 billion SAR (approximately $5 billion), is for the construction of dams that will form an artificial lake at the heart of the Trojena mountain resort. Trojena, set to open in 2026, is a key component of Neom, Saudi Arabia’s futuristic megacity.
Design, Scale of Trojina Dams
The main dam in the Trojena project will be a striking structure, reaching 145 meters in height and stretching 475 meters in length. Constructed with 2.7 million cubic meters of roller compact concrete (RCC), the dam is a testament to engineering prowess. The project also includes an innovative kidney-shaped dam, set to form an underwater island.
This dam will stand 38 meters tall and 700 meters long, with a connection to Lake Village via an underwater tunnel. Additionally, there’s another key dam, 65 meters high and 490 meters long, built with 4.15 million cubic meters of rockfill.
Collaborative Efforts in Construction
The Trojena project, with its multifaceted construction efforts, also involves other major contractors. A consortium consisting of Saudi Arabia-based Al-Auyni, Turkey’s Limak, and Beijing-based Power China, have been selected to work on the three dams. These contractors were engaged early in the project and are contributing their expertise in various aspects of the construction.
Role of Bechtel in Project Management
Bechtel, a top global industrial contractor, is the project management consultant for Trojena. Firstly, this role underlines the project’s complexity and size. Secondly, Bechtel will offer various services, including technical, commercial, and construction management.
