Lavrov Slams ‘Containment’ Strategy as Russia-China Partnership Grows in Beijing
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Tuesday condemned international efforts to “contain” Russia and China during his strategic Beijing visit this week. Moscow’s state media reported his sharp criticism while emphasizing the exceptionally warm reception from senior Chinese leadership officials. Furthermore, this high-level diplomatic meeting clearly signals deepening strategic cooperation between the two powerful nations amid escalating global tensions.
Russia’s foreign ministry released official photographs showing Lavrov receiving a ceremonial red-carpet welcome upon his arrival in Beijing. He subsequently held productive talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi during this significant diplomatic engagement.
Maria Zakharova shared their firm handshake image widely across major social media platforms shortly after their meeting concluded. Beijing and Moscow have significantly strengthened comprehensive economic and political partnerships since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Consequently, their robust alliance now actively shapes critical geopolitical dialogues across multiple diverse international regions today.
Lavrov Warns of “Dangerous Games” in Asia
Lavrov warned of “some very, very dangerous games going on” in East Asian geopolitical hotspots during his substantive talks with Wang. He specifically cited Taiwan, the disputed South China Sea, and the nuclear-armed Korean peninsula as areas requiring urgent international vigilance. Beijing firmly claims Taiwan as its inalienable territory and strongly opposes all US military assistance provided to the self-ruled island nation.
Additionally, Lavrov stated, “they are trying to dismantle (regional cooperation) by creating small-format, bloc-based structures aimed at containing both the People’s Republic of China and the Russian Federation”. “Our vast continent as a whole demands constant attention,” he emphasized during their lengthy and substantive diplomatic discussion yesterday.
Coordinated Diplomacy on Global Conflicts
Lavrov and Wang also discussed concrete plans for future high-level “contacts” between presidents Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping soon. China currently hosts numerous leaders from nations severely affected by the US-Israeli war on Iran and its economic fallout.
Moreover, Vietnam’s To Lam and Abu Dhabi’s Crown Prince Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan joined this week’s important diplomatic gatherings. China’s foreign ministry announced both ministers would “exchange views and coordinate positions on the development of bilateral relations, cooperation in various fields, and international and regional issues of common concern”.
The Russian foreign ministry added that the Ukraine war and Middle East conflicts would feature prominently in their bilateral talks today. Wang and Lavrov previously agreed on April 5 to jointly de-escalate rapidly escalating Middle East tensions effectively. China’s Premier Li Qiang told UAE leaders that Beijing remains “ready to further play a constructive role and contribute to the restoration of peace and tranquility in the Gulf region”.
