Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Defense Prince Khalid bin Salman met UK Defense Minister Grant Shapps at the Defense Exhibition in Riyadh today. The General Authority for Military Industries (GAMI) organized the Defense Exhibition.
Initially, the defense minister toured the exhibition which features participation of over 773 exhibitors representing 75 countries.
Meeting Attendees
Muhammad bin Ayyaf, Deputy Minister of Defense; Chief of Staff; Lieutenant General Fayyad bin Hamid Al-Ruwaili; Assistant Minister of Defense attended the meeting.
From the British side, Defense Procurement Minister James Cartledge, British Deputy Chief of Defense Staff Lieutenant General Rob Magowan, UK , General Director of Industry were present at the meeting.
KSA-UK Relationship
The UK and KSA have a strong economic relationship. The UK is considered as one of the largest investors in Saudi Arabia. Both countries have a shared interest in maintaining stability in the Middle East. They have worked together on numerous occasions to address regional challenges.
The UK provides military training, equipment, and assistance to the Saudi armed forces. It demonstrated the strength of the defense and security partnership between the two nations. In addition, Saudi Arabia has received a significant amount of its defense weapons from the UK.
Challenges and Opportunities
The KSA-UK relationship faced many challenges, particularly in light of human rights concerns and the ongoing conflicts in the region. The UK has faced criticism for its close ties with Saudi Arabia, particularly in light of the KSA’s involvement in the conflict in Yemen.
Even though the relationship between the KSA and the UK is a complicated one, both countries make joint efforts to cooperate to expand investments.
