The Japanese Ambassador to Saudi Arabia IWAI Fumio has recently held a special ceremony to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF).
According to Arab News, the ceremony highlighted the presence of H.E. Major General Shallah bin Thaar AlSalmi, Royal Saudi Land Forces, and several government officials and diplomats.

During his speech, the Ambassador stressed that JSDF plays an active role in keeping the international peace and stability through its involvement in the international peace efforts.
Such efforts include counter-piracy operations off the coast of Somalia and in the Gulf of Aden and the MFO in the Sinai Peninsula.

Moreover, Fumio expressed Japan’s welcome to boost cooperation with Saudi Arabia.
Therefore, both countries have promising opportunities to foster defense and security coordination notably after the visit of Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman to Japan on July 31, 2023.
In the light of this, the Ambassador noted the Saudi-Japanese active communication on possible defense equipment and technology, women’s empowerment and defense training and exchange programs.
