IsDB Signs Partnership with UN Population Fund, UNICEF to Provide Clean Water in Afghanistan

UNICEF and the Afghanistan Humanitarian Trust Fund (AHTF) have unveiled the completion of the “Sustainable and Climate-Resilient Water Supply Services in Remote Rural Communities” project in Afghanistan, reported the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
Mandated by the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), the $2 million initiative was fully funded by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief) and implemented in collaboration between the AHTF and UNICEF.
According to the initiative, over 30,000 people in 18 remote communities in Paktia and Logar provinces have got climate-friendly and sustainable water supply systems.
The UNICEF Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey 2022-2023 indicated the following statistics:
- Approximately 27% of Afghanistan’s population does not have access to safe drinking water.
- Nearly 4% lack basic sanitation services.
- Only 24% of households have access to all 3 services: basic drinking water, sanitation and hygiene.
The Community Development Councils led the construction of these 18 new water supply systems and will hand them over to the communities for ongoing operation and maintenance.
Furthermore, UNICEF-backed community mobilizers worked with these 18 communities to guide them on key aspects of the water supply projects and develop a shared understanding of the risks that may affect the sustainability of the systems.
The Afghanistan Humanitarian Fund (AHF) serves as a significant engine for delivering humanitarian assistance, meeting basic needs and promoting self-reliance and development in Afghanistan.
