Hani Najm Wins First Edition of Great Arab Minds in Medicine
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, awarded Dr. Hani Najm who is a Saudi national and the winner of the first edition of Great Arab Minds in medicine.
Innovations in Cardiac Surgery
Dr. Najm has performed over 10,000 heart surgeries for children and adults.
He has introduced innovative and exceptional surgical practices in cardiac surgery, particularly in congenital heart diseases.
He was part of a team that successfully removed a critical cancerous tumor from a 26-week-old fetus’s heart inside the mother’s womb.
Recognition for Arab Minds
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid emphasized that the Arab region once gifted the world sciences, inventions, and tools forming modern medicine’s foundation.
It continues to contribute significantly today. He noted that millions of exceptional Arab minds, dedicated to humanity’s future, deserve ongoing support for their innovation and creativity.
“Arab Pioneers” Initiative
Dr. Hani Najm was awarded the title in the first edition of the Great Arab Minds initiative for 2023 in medicine.
This award acknowledges his notable contributions to pediatric and adult cardiac surgery and his surgical innovations in treating congenital heart diseases.
First Flexible Heart Valve for Children
Dr. Najm also contributed to designing and developing a flexible heart valve that grows within the child.
This innovation spares thousands of infants and children from the risks and difficulties of repeated surgeries.
Career and Achievements
Dr. Najm currently heads the Pediatric and Adult Heart Surgery Department at Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, USA.
The pioneer surgeon graduated from King Saud University Medical College in 1985. He then specialized in cardiac and thoracic surgery, particularly in congenital heart surgeries for children.
He has transformed the Children’s Heart Center at King Abdulaziz Medical Center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, over 17 years.
Najim was a pioneer in performing complex heart surgeries in the Kingdom. The doctor also performed one of the first artificial heart transplants in Saudi Arabia.
