Hamas Applauds Houthi Missile Strike on Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport

The armed wing of Palestinian group Hamas praised a missile attack Sunday on Israel’s main international airport claimed by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels. “Yemen… escalates its attacks on the heart of the illegitimate Zionist entity, surpassing the most advanced defence systems in the world and striking its targets with precision,” Abu Obeida, spokesman for the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, said in a statement.

The Houthis have been carrying out drone and missile attacks since October 2023, in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. This escalation follows Israel’s military response to Hamas-led attacks on October 7, which have resulted in over 48,500 Palestinian deaths and widespread destruction. The Houthis have vowed to continue their attacks until Israel ends its military campaign in Gaza.

Israel Denies Damage, Vows Retaliation

Israeli authorities swiftly dismissed claims of significant damage, asserting that airport operations continued uninterrupted. Defense officials confirmed intercepting one missile near Tel Aviv but acknowledged heightened security risks. Prime Minister Netanyahu pledged a “swift, decisive response” to threats targeting civilian infrastructure.

The U.S. State Department condemned the strike, urging de-escalation, while Saudi Arabia called for restraint. The incident underscores widening regional fallout from the Israel-Hamas war, with maritime disruptions in the Red Sea further straining global trade routes.

However, recent intelligence reports reveal the Houthis now deploy long-range drones and missiles capable of reaching Israel, bolstered by Iranian technical support. The group’s escalating capabilities pose new challenges for Middle East stability, raising fears of prolonged cross-border conflicts.

Impact on Regional Stability

The ongoing conflict between the Houthis and Israel has raised concerns about regional stability and the potential for further escalation. The Houthis have threatened to continue their attacks until Israel ends its military campaign in Gaza, while Israel has vowed to respond forcefully to any further aggression.

The missile strike on Ben Gurion Airport and the subsequent retaliation by Israel highlight the escalating tensions between the Houthis and Israel. As the conflict continues, the international community has called for restraint and a de-escalation of hostilities to prevent further loss of life and damage to critical infrastructureز
