Gaza Events Ring Bell in Guernica

Guernica’s streets which witnessed the killing pf civilians in 1937 is now flooded with protesters asking the world to not repeat history. Acts of solidarity with Gaza and the Palestinians has been travelling all over the world: from U.S., UK passing by Netherlands to Spain.

People have been showing solidarity in every possible way whether it was boycotting, protesting, posting on social media or simply wearing the Palestinian Keffiyeh.

However, things have got a little bit more creative in Spain. A group of about 3000 people gathered in Guernica and formed a human mosaic of the Palestinian flag. Videos circulating the internet have shown the colossal flag with a Picasso painting called Guernica.

Guernica: 1937’s Gaza

This support is coming from the heart of the place which suffered the same fate of Gaza decades ago.

From the same place which suffered the same fate of Gaza decades ago, protests erupted under the slogan : “Neither the world nor history should accept a new Guernica,” as per euronews.

In 1937, Guernica came under heavy aerial bombing during the Spanish civil war. According to euronews, Hitler-affiliated forces carried out the attack.

As per aerial warfare international laws in 1937, Guernica was a legitimate military target.

Similar to the Gazans, most of the people in the Spanish city at that time were children and women.

In light of the tragedy, Picasso drew Guernica. It later became a symbol of the atrocities of war and a call for peace.

Sharing the same fate with Gaza, Guernica’s main square which was silent for many years echoed again with sirens to garner the world’s attention to the new Guernica.

This protest, coming from the heart of a city that suffered atrocities to support another place afflicted with the same fate now, is a blinding evidence of how the world does so little to break the cycles of history.
