The region’s climate is influenced by the southerly monsoon current associated with the Intertropical Front.
Vegetation Sampling Methods
To gather information about both the tree and shrub strata, two sampling methods were employed.
The study focused on major habitat types within the study area, including canyon areas, lower and higher elevation slope aspects, and plateau sites.
The plateau is characterized by thin soil development and extensive outcroppings of the Basement Complex.
The data collection included measurements of plant densities, species composition, and size class distribution.
Dominant Tree, Shrub Species
The quantitative analysis of the woody plants in the Asir woodlands revealed two dominant tree species and five dominant shrub species. Juniperus procera stood out as the primary tree species, while Euryops arabicus dominated the shrub strata.
The grasses Hypanhenia hirta and Themeda triandra were noted to provide most of the ground cover in isolated areas.
The presence of these species contributes to the overall biodiversity and ecological balance of the woodlands.
Ecological Patterns , Human Impact
The distribution of vegetation species in the Asir woodlands is influenced by ecological factors such as slope aspect, elevation, and human impact.
The lower elevations and southwest and west-facing slopes tend to have higher plant densities.
However, human activities like wood gathering and grazing have resulted in the suppression of regeneration and a reduction in species diversity and tree size class distribution.
