Apple to Launch Event on May 7, New iPads Expected

Apple announced it will hold an event on May 7, according to Reuters. Reports suggest this event may unveil revamped versions of the iPad Pro and iPad Air. The Cupertino-based company didn’t provide specifics about the event, set to begin at 7 a.m. PT (2 p.m. GMT).

Bloomberg News reported last month that Apple suppliers were ramping up production of new iPads, with a launch planned for early May. The release will feature revamped versions of the iPad Pro and Air, according to people familiar with the matter. The Pro models will get sharper new OLED displays – short for organic light-emitting diode – and the updated iPad Air will feature a 12.9in screen option for the first time, they said.

The new models mark Apple’s first major update to the lineup since 2018, following the iPad‘s initial introduction in January 2010. This potential launch coincides with a decline in iPad sales, which fell 25% to $7.02 billion in the first quarter. Similarly, iPhone sales, Apple’s flagship product, have also been slowing down.

It is a safe bet that there will be new iPads launched that day, given the picture of an Apple pencil and art on the invite, said Ben Bajarin, CEO of consulting firm Creative Strategies.

As economic uncertainty impacts the tablet market and consumer spending shrinks, Apple intends to boost demand with new products. Apple currently sells five iPad models, including the Pro, Air, Mini, and the ninth and 10th generations of its regular iPad. Despite this, iPad sales comprised only 5.9% of Apple’s total net sales of $119.58 billion in the first quarter ending Dec. 30.

It is worth noting that Apple is also scheduled to hold its Worldwide Developers Conference from June 10 to 14.
