CST Launches Comprehensive Global Guide for Developing Regulations for E-waste Management

The Communications, Space & Technology Commission (CST), in partnership with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), announced the launch of a “Comprehensive Global Guide for Developing Policies and Regulations for E-waste Management.” The guide aims to support government bodies in developing countries in creating national policies and legislation for e-waste management based on global best practices. This initiative coincides with Saudi Arabia’s hosting of the Global Symposium for Regulators (GSR25).

The guide provides comprehensive and practical steps based on real-world experiences from Zambia, Rwanda, and Paraguay. Its goal is to empower policymakers and regulators to draft and implement effective national legislation that supports the transition to a circular economy. Moreover, the guide focuses on inclusivity, sustainable financing mechanisms, and promoting compliance, linking policy formulation stages with business models.
Targeting government agencies that regulate the communications and technology sectors and specialize in environmental sustainability, the guide is especially useful for countries without or in the process of developing e-waste policies or regulations. It offers flexible and integrated guidance tools to address key challenges in the field.

The guide is an extension of Saudi Arabia’s efforts to lead international initiatives toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. It is one of the outcomes of the “Developing E-waste Management Regulations” initiative launched by the CST in collaboration with the ITU during the 2023 Global Symposium for Regulators. Finally, this initiative contributes to laying the groundwork for establishing global regulations and standards to reduce e-waste.
