Saudi Arabia Calls for Crescent Sighting to Mark Eid Al-Fitr

The Saudi Supreme Court has urged Muslims nationwide to observe the Shawwal crescent on Saturday evening, 29 March, 2025 (29 Ramadan, 1446 AH). This sighting will confirm Eid Al-Fitr’s start, marking Ramadan’s end. The court emphasized communal participation for accurate lunar confirmation.

In their official statement, the Supreme Court requested that anyone who spots the crescent moon—either with the naked eye or binoculars—should report their sighting. You can register your testimony at the nearest court or contact a local center for assistance. This calls for widespread participation across the Kingdom.

Join the Efforts for Crescent Sighting

The Supreme Court expressed hope that those capable of spotting the crescent will take part in specially formed observation committees. These committees are present in various regions and aim to benefit the Muslim community. Engaging in this activity allows for a collective observance of an important religious event.

If the Shawwal crescent is sighted on March 29, Eid Al-Fitr will commence on Sunday, March 30. However, if the moon is not visible, Ramadan will conclude after 30 days, pushing the Eid celebration to Monday, March 31. This spiritual observance signifies the end of Ramadan, which began on March 1 of this year.

Expert Insight on Crescent Visibility

Notably, weather and climate researcher Abdulaziz Al-Hussaini shared his insights regarding moon visibility. He noted that astronomical calculations suggest challenges due to the moon’s small size and dim illumination. Despite these challenges, previous experiences indicate that observers might still be able to spot it.

The Saudi Supreme Court continues to oversee this vital observance, ensuring that Muslim communities are ready to celebrate Eid Al-Fitr properly. With participation from all corners of the Kingdom, the sighting of the Shawwal crescent can unite Muslims in joyful anticipation of the festivities ahead.
