Saudi Arabia’s cement and clinker exports have continued to soar, reaching a new milestone of 8.48 million tonnes in 2023. This marks the fourth consecutive year of exports exceeding 8 million tonnes, a remarkable achievement that underscores the industry’s strength and growth.
Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources Bandar Alkhorayef highlighted these achievements during the launch of Madinah Cement Co.’s first sustainability report. He noted Saudi Arabia’s position as the leading cement producer in the Arab world and the 10th largest globally, with an annual production capacity exceeding 80 million tonnes. The Kingdom supports its cement industry with 20 factories across the nation.
Domestic Demand and Future Projections
Domestic cement demand reached about 47.3 million tonnes in 2022, driven by ongoing large-scale development projects. With construction investments expected to reach SR6 trillion ($1.6 trillion) by 2030, demand is likely to grow further. Alkhorayef emphasized the role of leading companies in adopting advanced manufacturing technologies to boost production efficiency and quality.
Vision 2030 and Construction Demand
Saudi Arabia’s cement industry is vital to Vision 2030, supporting projects like NEOM, the Red Sea Project, and Qiddiya. These initiatives aim to diversify the economy away from oil dependency, increasing demand in construction and infrastructure. This surge boosts consumption of building materials such as cement, positioning the Kingdom as a key player in regional and global cement markets.
Sustainable Development Initiatives
The ministry has developed strategic recommendations to make the cement sector more sustainable, including the Industrial Competitiveness Program and the Liquid Fuel Displacement Program. These efforts aim to enhance energy efficiency, reduce production costs, and minimize carbon emissions. Alkhorayef also highlighted collaborations with King Abdullah University of Science and Technology and other stakeholders to research and produce environmentally friendly cement.
