US Lobbies IAEA Board for Resolution Demanding Clarity on Iran’s Bombed Nuclear Sites

The United States is pressing other members of the UN nuclear watchdog’s Board of Governors to support a draft resolution demanding Iran to reveal the fate of its bombed nuclear facilities and the stockpiles of enriched uranium previously stored at those sites, according to Reuters.

Circulated ahead of this week’s quarterly meeting of the 35-member Board of Governors, the draft resolution threatens to further complicate ongoing US-Iran negotiations.

Despite the fact that previous IAEA Board of Governors resolutions targeting Iran have passed with broad support, the latest draft could face greater resistance as Washington and Israel were responsible for the June strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites. These attacks have prevented the IAEA officials from returning to the sites.

Moreover, the draft further added that Iran must “provide the Agency with precise information on nuclear material accountancy and safeguarded nuclear facilities in Iran” and must “grant the Agency all access it needs to verify this information.” Moreover, it underscores that both requirements should be met “without delay” since they are “essential and urgent.”

However, the text stops short of referring Iran to the United Nations Security Council.

Nuclear Tensions Rise

Iranian officials have repeatedly accused the IAEA of providing Israel with a pretext for its bombing campaign, noting that Israeli attacks began the day after the agency’s board voted to declare Tehran in breach of its obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

In 2025, the European powers_ Britain, France, and Germany_ reimposed sanctions on Tehran after they claimed that Iran has violated a 2015 deal that aimed at halting it from developing a nuclear weapon.

Iran has denied this accusation and said that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.
