The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced on Friday that the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Venezuelan María Corina Machado in recognition of “her efforts to promote the democratic rights of the Venezuelan people and her pursuit of a peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.”
What do we know about María Corina Machado?
The committee stated that the award honors Machado’s “outstanding role in defending political freedoms and her ongoing support for civil movements seeking to restore democracy in the country.”
María Corina Machado is one of the most prominent opposition figures in Venezuela. In recent years, she has led a movement calling for an end to President Nicolás Maduro’s rule and for the holding of “free and fair” elections.
Machado spent more than 14 months in hiding after refusing to withdraw from the political scene following Maduro’s claim of victory in the elections.
She was born on October 7, 1967, and has been active in Venezuelan politics since the early 2000s, eventually becoming one of the leading advocates of democratic reform.
In 2024, she received the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought from the European Parliament in recognition of “her stance in defense of human rights and democracy in Venezuela,” according to the award committee.
