US is building regional defense structure with Saudi Arabia: State Department:

The US State Department welcomed the visit of HRH Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan to Ukraine, stressing that Saudi Arabia is a strategic partner and that the US is continuing to “build a regional defense structure” with it.

US State Department spokesman Ned Price said in a press briefing: “We welcome the visit made to Kyiv, on Sunday, by the Saudi foreign minister and its senior officials in the humanitarian and energy fields, in order to meet with (Ukrainian) President Volodymyr Zelensky and the rest of his leadership team.”

He stressed that the US is “happy” to see the $400 million support announced by Saudi Arabia during the visit, pointing out that this support includes providing generators, products, and energy supplies that Ukraine desperately needs.

“Positive Step”

He continued, “The Saudi initiative is a positive step from the Middle East region, and we hope to see more of our partners there in the coming months.”

Ned Price also welcomed Saudi Arabia’s vote in favor of the UN General Assembly resolution adopted last week on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

A Saudi delegation headed by Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan signed on Sunday two memorandums of understanding in the Ukrainian capital, KYIV, to provide humanitarian support to the Ukrainians, during bin Farhan’s visit, during which he also met President Zelensky and Ukrainian officials.

The Saudi foreign minister said that the visit focused on alleviating the suffering of the Ukrainian people, noting that the Kingdom had provided two aid packages worth $400 million.

Strategic Partnership

The US State Department spokesman indicated that the US is also “happy that the truce in Yemen has held for the tenth month,” stressing that thousands of lives have been saved thanks to this truce.

“We have been strategic partners with Saudi Arabia for 8 decades across multiple administrations, and certainly across party lines,” he said.

Spokesman Ned Price confirmed that the United States is “moving forward with building a regional defense architecture with Saudi Arabia.”

He added, “This not only helps Saudi Arabia to defend itself against the attacks it is still facing but also helps us, through its support (the Kingdom), to protect about 70,000 Americans, both military and civilians, who live in Saudi Arabia.”
