Trump to Address UN, Hold Talks with Mideast Leaders

The US President, Donald Trump, is set to address the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on Tuesday, as world leaders are gathering for the UNGA’s 80th session.

Moreover, Trump will also hold a multilateral summit with leaders of key Arab and Muslim countries on the sidelines of the General Assembly.

Trump Addresses UN

During a briefing at the White House on Monday, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said that Trump will deliver a “major speech” to the UNGA on Tuesday on the “renewal of American strength around the world” under his leadership.

She also said that Trump’s speech will touch upon the wave of recognition of Palestinian Statehood that took place at the UN high-level Two-State Solution Conference on Monday, which the US did not take part in.

Two-State Solution Conference

At the High-level International Conference for the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution in New York, co-hosted by Saudi Arabia and France, several countries formally recognized the State of Palestine, despite strong opposition from the US and Israel.

These countries include France, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Luxembourg, Malta, Portugal, the UK and Northern Ireland, Denmark, Andorra, Monaco and San Marino.

The landmark diplomatic move came as the war in Gaza is nearing its two-year mark and Israel is pressing ahead with an expanded ground offensive in Gaza City, amid mounting global condemnation of its conduct of the war that has killed more than 65,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.

US Opposition to Palestinian State

Addressing a question about Western countries’ decision to recognize a Palestinian State, Leavitt said that the US President “disagrees with this decision.”

She added that Trump “feels that it does not do anything to release the hostages, which is the primary goal right now in Gaza, does nothing to end this conflict and bring this war to a close.”

According to Leavitt, Trump believes that the decision is “a reward for Hamas” and “just more talk and not enough action” from the US’ friends and allies,” adding that the US President will talk about that at the UN.

Multilateral Summit

The White House Press Secretary said that Trump will hold a “multilateral meeting” with the leaders of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Indonesia, Türkiye, Pakistan, Egypt, the UAE, and Jordan.

Axios reported earlier that the meeting aims to discuss ways to end the war in Gaza and explore a postwar plan for the enclave, which could involve Arab and Muslim countries’ participation.

Trump will also host the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, at the White House on September 29.

Moreover, Trump will hold bilateral meetings on Tuesday with the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, and the leaders of Ukraine, Argentina, and the European Union (EU), according to Leavitt.
