Trump Eyes Post-Saudi Summit Talks with Putin Amid Diplomatic Push

US President Donald Trump has hinted at a possible meeting with Russia’s Vladimir Putin which could occur after his mid-May visit to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE.

The White House announced on Wednesday that Trump will embark on a tour in the Middle East from 13 to 16 May, marking his second foreign trip since returning to office.

When asked about meeting Putin in Saudi Arabia, Trump responded, “It’s possible, but most likely not. I think we’ll meet with him shortly thereafter,” as quoted by CNN.

Trump and Putin have not met in person since the war began. However, they have had phone conversations.

Trump and Putin’s relationship has seen significant developments recently. In February, they had a lengthy phone call, discussing the war in Ukraine and other topics. Trump described the call as “highly productive” and mentioned that they agreed to work closely together.

Saudi Arabia’s Role

Saudi Arabia has played a crucial role in facilitating discussions between the U.S. and Russia. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has been instrumental in these efforts, encouraging dialogue and supporting a potential meeting between Trump and Putin.

The potential meeting between Trump and Putin signifies a thawing of U.S.-Russia relations. This shift is evident in recent developments, such as prisoner exchanges and high-level talks between U.S. and Russian officials.

Trump’s upcoming visit to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE in mid-May could pave the way for a significant meeting with Putin. This meeting would mark a notable step in U.S.-Russia relations, with the Kingdom playing a key role in facilitating the dialogue.
