Trump Announces Opposition to UK’s Move of Recognizing Palestinian State

US President Donald Trump on Thursday expressed his opposition to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s plan to recognize the Palestinian state, according to Al-Arabiya.

The UK is set to formally recognize a Palestinian state this weekend at the United Nations General Assembly, the Times newspaper reported after Trump has left the country, ending his official visit.

“I have a disagreement with the prime minister on that score – one of our few disagreements,” Trump said at a press conference with Starmer after bilateral talks.

In July, Starmer warned that the UK would take this decisive move if Israel failed to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and reach a ceasefire deal to put an end to its devastating war with Hamas.

Recently, several Western countries including Canada, France, Australia, and Belgium have decided to recognize the Palestinian state as a response to Israel’s ongoing offensive in Gaza.

Meanwhile, Israel said that these moves would reward Hamas.

The British PM has been facing mounting pressure to officially recognize Palestinian statehood, both from opposition lawmakers and from members of his own Labour Party government.

Approximately 60 British Labour MPs have recently urged the UK government to immediately recognize the Palestinian state and halt what they labeled as “ethnic cleansing” in Gaza, according to The Guardian.
