Trump Announces F-35 Jets Sale to Saudi Arabia

US President Donald Trump said on Monday that Washington would approve the sale of advanced F-35 fighter jets to Saudi Arabia, AFP reported.

Trump’s remarks came on the eve of Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman’s visit to the White House, where he will meet with the US President.

“They (Saudis) want to buy. They are a great ally. We will be doing that. We will be selling them F-35s,” Trump told reporters in response to questions about the possible sale of the aircraft.

The F-35 jet is a fifth-generation fighter manufactured by Lockheed Martin. The US has only approved the sale of the F-35 stealth fighters to its closest allies, including several European NATO allies and Israel.

Reuters reported earlier this month that Riyadh wants to buy about 48 F-35s in a potential multi-billion dollar deal. The possible purchase of the advanced fighter jets will significantly alter the military balance in the Middle East, giving Saudi Arabia a military edge against regional threats.

The Saudi Crown Prince departed for the US on an official working visit upon an invitation from President Trump, the Royal Court announced on Monday. During the visit, the two leaders will discuss a diverse range of issues, from regional developments to economic partnership, defense cooperation and technology deals.

Crown Prince at White House: A New Chapter for Saudi-US Partnership

The White House has prepared for a grand reception ceremony to welcome Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. In the light of this, the White House has adorned its South Lawn with Saudi Arabia’s flags alongside American flags. Moreover, it announced artillery drill rehearsals in preparation for receiving the Crown Prince.

“It will be more than a meeting – we’re honoring Saudi Arabia, the Crown Prince,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on Friday.
