The Saudi Space Agency (SSA) announced today the launch of the “Abaad” Astronomy Photography Competition to empower and encourage those interested in astronomical photography and increase the scientific awareness of astronomy and space sciences.
The Objectives
According to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the new competition stands as a testament to SSA’s commitment to enrich Arabic content, unleash the community’s horizons in astronomy and space sciences, and provide a new look at the astronomical photography. Such a look will enable photographers to consider this exceptional type of photography as an artistic expression and scientific exploration.
The Tracks
The competition includes three main tracks, as follows:
1-Deep Space
The first track targets professional astronomical photographs as it focuses on photographing galaxies, nebulae, and stars.
2- Solar System
“Solar System” track is basically concentrated on planets, the sun, the moon, and comets. Therefore, the track targets amateurs and professionals.
3- Saudi Space
The idea of the last track is to figure out the link between celestial bodies and national heritage and landmarks. It targets beginners, amateurs, and professionals.
The Deadline
The competition commences today, August 15, and concludes on Friday, November 15.
The Conditions
SSA called for strict adherence to the following conditions in order to be qualified:
- Participants should choose and compete in one track.
- Using modified photos or those created by artificial intelligence technologies is not allowed.
- Only Saudi citizens and residents of Saudi Arabia are allowed to apply.
- The photos should be taken in the Kingdom and within the competition’s deadline.
The Evaluation
The evaluation process will undergo several stages, including:
- Initial evaluation by a specialized committee
- Nominating of the works qualified for the final evaluation
- Announcing the nine winners
The Activities
SSA will hold a special exhibition showcasing various opportunities to qualify participants, alongside several workshops and another exhibition for astronomical photography.
