Saudi Crown Prince Launches Ambitious Red Sea Sustainability Strategy

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has unveiled the National Red Sea Sustainability Strategy to safeguard marine ecosystems and support local communities. The strategy is a crucial step in advancing Saudi Arabia’s transition to a blue economy, in line with Vision 2030.

A Pioneering Effort in Environmental Sustainability

The Crown Prince highlighted Saudi Arabia’s commitment to sustainability and environmental conservation, emphasizing the nation’s vast economic and geographical potential. He stressed that the blue economy is now a cornerstone of the Kingdom’s diversified economic future.

The Red Sea region spans 186,000 square kilometers and features diverse marine ecosystems, including the world’s fourth-largest barrier reef system. It also holds 6.2 percent of the world’s coral reefs, highlighting its significant role in global marine biodiversity.

Key Goals and Environmental Initiatives

The strategy outlines five objectives: environmental sustainability, economic development, social development, safety and security, and governance. It includes 48 initiatives aimed at balancing economic growth with environmental preservation.

By 2030, the plan seeks to achieve significant milestones, including expanding marine protected areas from 3 percent to 30 percent. It also aims to increase renewable energy’s share in the national energy mix to 50 percent and boost job creation in blue economy sectors.

Enhancing Saudi Arabia’s Global Leadership

The Crown Prince stated that Saudi Arabia aspires to make the Red Sea region a global hub for blue economy activities. The Kingdom also aims to lead in research, development, and innovation in marine-based industries.

The strategy emphasizes ecotourism, fisheries, renewable energy, and water desalination, ensuring a sustainable and diversified economic future.

The Crown Prince urged collective efforts to protect the Red Sea’s natural resources and support the communities that depend on it. This initiative aligns with Saudi Arabia’s broader mission to embed environmental sustainability within its economic framework.

The National Red Sea Sustainability Strategy marks a significant step in the Kingdom’s quest to lead the world in sustainable marine economy practices.
