Saudi Arabia to Host Inaugural Olympic Esports Games in 2027

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on Tuesday that Riyadh will host the first Olympic Esports Games in 2027 instead of 2025. This significant event is part of a twelve-year partnership established in 2024. The IOC aims to connect with younger audiences involved in gaming, as traditional Olympic viewers gradually age.

Strategic Move to Engage Young Fans

In recent years, the IOC has explored opportunities in esports. A dedicated commission formed to tap into the growing gaming community has focused on attracting young fans. In 2021, the IOC launched the Olympic Virtual Series as an initial venture into esports. This led to their agreement with Saudi Arabia to host the inaugural Olympic Esports Games.

IOC President Thomas Bach emphasized that a clear roadmap now exists for these historic Games. He expressed enthusiasm, stating that the journey to achieving esports Olympics has begun. A six-member committee, led by Ng Ser Miang from Singapore, will determine which games will feature in the inaugural Esports Olympics.

Saudi Arabia’s Commitment to Sports Development

Saudi Arabia has invested billions into various sports, including football, boxing, and golf. Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal, the Minister of Sports, conveyed optimism about the upcoming Games. He stated that the timeline for the Olympic Esports Games is clear and beneficial for all involved. The focus will now shift to effectively delivering this exciting event. The country anticipates welcoming participants and helping esports athletes fulfill their dreams.

Collaboration with Global Partners

Earlier, IOC President Bach noted that three billion people engage in gaming worldwide, a number that likely continues to grow. The IOC and the Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF) are collaborating closely to create a robust framework for the Games. This partnership ensures integrity, sustainability, and proper qualification pathways in esports.

With over three billion gamers worldwide, Esports has become a cultural and economic powerhouse. The Olympic Esports Games aim to harness this growth, providing a platform for athletes and fans alike. The event will also establish qualification pathways, ensuring integrity and sustainability in the esports ecosystem.

The rescheduled Olympic Esports Games in 2027 will mark a new chapter in sports history. As Saudi Arabia prepares to host the world, the kingdom continues to position itself as a hub for innovation and global events. With the road to the Games set to begin this year, the future of esports looks brighter than ever.
