Significance in Saudi’s Sports Agenda
The Spanish Super Cup is among major sporting events hosted by Saudi Arabia as part of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s reform agenda aimed at transforming the Kingdom into a business and tourism hub while diversifying its economy away from fossil fuels.
Bidding for Future Events
Earlier this month, Saudi Arabia expressed interest in hosting the 2034 Football World Cup, amidst its willingness to invest heavily in sporting events, a move criticized as “sports washing” or using sports to divert attention from persistent human rights violations criticisms.
International Reactions
In a recent interview with Fox News, bin Salman brushed off such criticisms, affirming the economic benefits for Saudi Arabia in continuing “sports washing”.
Earlier Achievements
Earlier this year, Saudi Arabia confirmed hosting the 2027 Asian Football Cup, and last year won the hosting rights for the 2029 Asian Winter Games, alongside other events in tennis, golf, desert rallies, and boxing.
