Saudi Arabia is positioning itself as a major supplier of green energy to Europe, with Italy emerging as a key partner in this endeavor. As part of its broader strategy to diversify its economy away from oil and gas, the Kingdom is ramping up its production of low-carbon products, including green and blue hydrogen.
Italy as a Strategic Ally
Saudi Investment Minister Khalid Al-Falih emphasized Italy’s crucial role in facilitating the export of these energy products to Europe. Speaking at a business conference in Milan, Al-Falih described Italy as a “partner of choice” for delivering green products to the European continent. This collaboration aligns with the European Union’s goal of producing and importing 20 million tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030.
Investment in Green Hydrogen
Saudi Arabia is heavily investing in both green hydrogen, produced using renewable energy, and blue hydrogen, derived from natural gas with carbon capture technology. Despite the hydrogen market being in its early stages, the Kingdom is actively seeking reliable partners to ensure the success of its export ambitions.
The success of Saudi Arabia’s green energy export plan hinges on substantial investments in infrastructure. Al-Falih highlighted the importance of developing ports and pipelines to transport green hydrogen to Europe. Italy’s strategic geographical position makes it an ideal hub for distributing hydrogen across the continent.
European Partnerships
Italy is already engaged in significant hydrogen infrastructure projects. In May, it signed a cooperation agreement with Germany and Austria to develop a pipeline system that will transport hydrogen from the southern Mediterranean to northern Europe.
