Italian authorities dismantled a sophisticated financial network on Saturday by arresting nine individuals suspected of laundering funds for Hamas, highlighting the growing scrutiny of humanitarian organizations that might serve as fronts for militant activities in the Middle East.
Genoa prosecutors coordinated the high-profile raid alongside specialized anti-mafia and anti-terrorism units to disrupt the group’s complex financial infrastructure. These suspects allegedly diverted approximately 7 million euros ($8.2 million) intended for humanitarian aid toward Hamas-linked entities over two years.
Consequently, the Italian police seized more than 8 million euros in various assets to prevent further illegal transactions.
Officers discovered 1.08 million euros in physical cash during subsequent searches of charity offices and private residences on Sunday morning.
Furthermore, the authorities found pro-Hamas propaganda materials which suggests a deep ideological commitment among the members of the organization.
International Cooperation Leads to Breakthrough
The investigation began when financial institutions flagged several suspicious transactions that did not align with standard charitable spending patterns. Afterward, Italian investigators expanded their reach by collaborating with Dutch authorities and other European Union nations through the agency Eurojust. This international partnership proved essential for tracking the movement of millions across different borders within the European banking system.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed her gratitude to the law enforcement agencies for uncovering what she termed a “complex operation,” specifically criticizing the use of “so-called charity organizations” to mask the financing of groups that the EU labels as terrorists.
Similarly, Israeli Ambassador Jonathan Peled praised Italy for its decisive action against the infiltration of radical elements into European society. While the government celebrates this legal victory, Meloni faces significant domestic pressure regarding her unwavering support for Israel’s ongoing offensive.
Large street protests continue to erupt across major Italian cities as the humanitarian crisis in Gaza intensifies following the 7 October 2023 attacks. This latest law enforcement action reinforces Italy’s commitment to security even as the broader regional conflict fuels intense public debate.
