Israel-Syria Peace Talks Advance, But Deal Remains Distant: Netanyahu

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Sunday that Israel is making progress in negotiations for a security deal with Syria. However, he cautioned the full agreement remained a long way off and not immediately imminent.

During a cabinet meeting, Netanyahu highlighted that Israel’s recent victory against Hezbollah in Lebanon has created new opportunities for peace with its northern neighbors, stating, “We are holding talks with the Syrians; there is some progress, but there is still a long way to go.” Consequently, Netanyahu attributed the ongoing discussions with Syria and Lebanon to Israel’s decisive victories on the northern front.

Syria’s Perspective on the Negotiations

Moreover, Syria’s President Ahmed al-Sharaa commented on Wednesday, stating that the ongoing negotiations with Israel could yield results “in the coming days.” He described a security pact as a “necessity” for Syria. Furthermore, he insisted that any agreement must respect Syria’s airspace and territorial integrity, monitored by the United Nations.

The discussions between Syria and Israel aim to establish a security pact that Damascus hopes will halt Israeli airstrikes and secure the withdrawal of Israeli troops from southern Syria. As both sides continue to negotiate, the international community watches closely, hoping for a peaceful resolution to this long-standing conflict.
