India, Pakistan Clash in Kashmir After Deadly Attack

Indian officials reported a brief exchange of fire with Pakistani soldiers along their highly militarized frontier in the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir. Tensions between New Delhi and Islamabad have escalated following a deadly attack on tourists.

Deadly Attack Sparks Diplomatic Crisis

On Tuesday, gunmen killed 26 people near the resort town of Pahalgam in Kashmir. India immediately labeled the massacre a “terror attack.” Indian officials claimed it had “cross-border” links, blaming Pakistan for supporting it. However, Pakistan denied any involvement in the attack. A previously unknown militant group, the Kashmir Resistance, claimed responsibility.

Three Indian army officials reported that Pakistani soldiers used small arms and fired at an Indian position in Kashmir late Thursday. Indian soldiers retaliated, and no casualties were reported.

In response, India suspended a crucial water-sharing treaty with Pakistan. India also closed the only functional land border crossing and cut the number of diplomatic staff. Additionally, India revoked all visas issued to Pakistani nationals.

Pakistan retaliated by canceling visas for Indian nationals and closing its airspace. Pakistan suspended all trade with India and warned that any attempt to stop or divert water flow would be considered an “act of war”.

UN Calls for Restraint

The United Nations urged both countries to exercise maximum restraint, stating that issues between Pakistan and India should be resolved peacefully through meaningful and mutual engagement.

India and Pakistan have a long history of conflict over Kashmir, with both nations claim the region in its entirety and have fought several wars and skirmishes. India describes all militancy in Kashmir as Pakistan-backed terrorism. Pakistan denies this, and many Kashmiris view the militants as part of a home-grown freedom struggle.

The recent exchange of fire and diplomatic measures highlight the ongoing tensions, with this conflict having significant implications for regional stability and international relations.
