GACA Unveils Saudi Aviation Sector’s Growth in 2023

The General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) has revealed the significant strides taken by Saudi Arabia’s aviation sector in 2023. It was largely attributed to the comprehensive implementation of the Saudi Aviation Strategy. This strategic roadmap has played a pivotal role in driving the sector’s expansion and enhancing its global competitiveness.
Impressive Growth Figures
Flight operations witnessed a remarkable surge. Numbers escalated by 16% to reach a total of 814,995 flights, compared to the previous year’s figure of 701,290. Concurrently, passenger traffic experienced a substantial upswing; it surged by 26% to reach a staggering 112 million passengers, a notable increase from 88 million passengers in the preceding year. These figures reflect the sector’s resilience in rebounding from the challenges posed by the pandemic. It also signify its surpassing of pre-pandemic levels, signaling a robust recovery trajectory.
Enhanced Connectivity
Furthermore, Saudi Arabia has significantly expanded its air connectivity, with a network of 52 flights linking the Kingdom to 148 destinations worldwide. This enhanced connectivity does not only reinforce the Kingdom’s position as a key aviation hub in the Middle East but also facilitates greater ease of travel for passengers, thereby bolstering tourism and business activities.
LCCs: Catalyzing Travel Demand
The proliferation of low-cost carriers (LCCs) has emerged as a driving force behind the surge in passenger traffic. Domestically, LCCs have gained substantial market share, commanding 44% of the market compared to 27% previously, underscoring a notable shift in traveler preferences towards more cost-effective travel options. Similarly, internationally, LCCs have witnessed a doubling of their market share. It reached 32% in 2023 from 16% pre-pandemic. Therefore, it reflected their growing appeal among travelers seeking affordable and convenient travel solutions.
Al-Duailej Extols Saudi Arabia’s Aviation Advancements
Abdulaziz Al-Duailej, President of GACA, lauded the remarkable growth achieved by the Saudi aviation sector in 2023. He attributed it to the strategic foresight embodied in the Saudi Aviation Strategy. He emphasized that these achievements position Saudi Arabia as a leading aviation hub in the region. It also underscores its growing global connectivity and influence in the aviation industry.
Moreover, Al-Duailej highlighted the pivotal role played by the private sector in driving the sector’s growth. He cited successful Public-Private Partnership projects such as the expansion of Madinah Airport. He expressed optimism regarding future growth prospects. Plans are underway to further enhance airport infrastructure and services to accommodate the increasing demand for air travel.
Continued Developments
The unveiling of these impressive growth figures and strategic initiatives took place during the 12th meeting of the Saudi Aviation Strategy Steering Committee in Medina. Among the notable developments announced was the ambitious plan to double the capacity of Madinah Airport from 8 to 17 million passengers. The developments underscore the Kingdom’s commitment to enhancing its aviation infrastructure to meet the evolving needs of travelers.
Contributions to the Economy
The significance of the aviation sector to Saudi Arabia’s economy cannot be overstated; its contribution accounts for approximately 45% of the Gross Domestic Product. With 28 airports, including 15 international ones, the sector serves as a vital driver of economic growth. It will also facilitate trade, tourism, and investment activities.
Future Prospects: Riyadh Air
Looking ahead, the establishment of “Riyadh Air” by the Public Investment Fund, under the leadership of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, marks a significant milestone in the aviation sector. As the Kingdom’s new national carrier, Riyadh Air aims to further elevate Saudi Arabia’s strategic position by enhancing air connectivity with key regions. The regions include Asia, Africa, and Europe, thereby fostering economic growth and prosperity.
