His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, together with Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Amir of the State of Qatar, attended the signing of a landmark agreement to build a high-speed electric passenger railway linking Saudi Arabia and Qatar—an initiative that underscores the enduring fraternal and historic ties between the two nations.
The agreement, signed by Saudi Minister of Transport and Logistic Services Saleh Al-Jasser and Qatar’s Minister of Transport Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulla bin Mohammed Al Thani, falls under the umbrella of the Saudi-Qatari Coordination Council. It represents a major strategic leap toward deeper cooperation, developmental integration, and sustainable progress, highlighting the shared vision for regional prosperity.
High-speed Electric Passenger Railway
Stretching 785 kilometers, the new high-speed line will connect Riyadh and Doha and include key stops such as Hofuf and Dammam. It will also link King Salman International Airport with Hamad International Airport, forming a powerful new corridor for fast, efficient, and sustainable travel across the region.
With operating speeds surpassing 300 km/h, the railway will slash travel time between the two capitals to roughly two hours, dramatically enhancing mobility, boosting trade and tourism, and elevating overall quality of life.
Scheduled for completion within six years, the project will leverage cutting-edge rail technologies and smart engineering solutions to ensure smooth, safe, and world-class operations. It is projected to contribute nearly SAR 115 billion to the combined GDP of both countries, accommodate more than 10 million passengers annually, and generate over 30,000 direct and indirect jobs.
The railway will also support environmental sustainability by cutting carbon emissions and fostering advanced, efficient, and eco-friendly mobility. As one of the most significant strategic initiatives in the region, it will play a vital role in strengthening connectivity and integration among the Gulf Cooperation Council countries.
