San Marino officially recognized the Palestinian State at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly on Saturday, according to Arab News.
Foreign Minister Luca Beccari announced that San Marino’s parliament mandated the government to take this step with unanimous support.
“Today, before this Assembly, we announce the fulfillment of that mandate: San Marino officially recognizes the State of Palestine,” Beccari said.
By making this announcement in New York, San Marino officially recognized Palestine “as a sovereign and independent state within secure, internationally recognized borders, in line with UN resolutions.”
“Having a state is the right of the Palestinian people. It is not, and can never be, a reward for Hamas,” Beccari added.
He also expressed sorrow over the unthinkable humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the West Bank, calling it “unbearable” and “one of the most painful and enduring tragedies of our era.”
“Nothing can justify the collective punishment of the Palestinian people through indiscriminate bombing, starvation and displacement,” Beccari added.
In the same context, he “unequivocally” denounced the Hamas attack on Israel of Oct. 7, 2023, and again urged for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.
He also affirmed his country’s call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, full and unhindered humanitarian access, and an urgent end to Israel’s illegal settlement of Palestinian land in the West Bank.
“Unless we act with unity and determination, the vision of two peoples living side by side in dignity and security will be lost,” he said.
