Saudi Arabia Races to Claim Global Lithium Crown, Powering Vision 2030 Ambitions

Saudi Arabia aggressively pursues top global lithium producer status, targeting dominance in this critical “white gold” essential for batteries and clean energy technology worldwide, directly fueling the Kingdom’s economic diversification under Saudi Vision 2030. Consequently, localizing electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing and renewable energy technologies becomes significantly stronger. Furthermore, securing abundant lithium supplies is vital for achieving the ambitious target of producing 300,000 EVs annually by 2030.

Key US Partnerships for Tech Transfer

Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources Bandar Alkhorayef recently concluded a pivotal US visit focused squarely on developing strategic partnerships. He actively sought advanced technology transfer in mineral extraction and processing with leading firms. Specifically, Alkhorayef met Lilac Solutions to explore their innovative lithium extraction technologies thoroughly. He also held crucial discussions with Albemarle Corporation’s leadership regarding lithium hydroxide conversion processes vital for battery production, with the talks centered on mutual opportunities in critical minerals essential for the global energy transition and EV manufacturing boom.

Driven by the EV industry’s explosive growth, global lithium-ion battery demand will increase fivefold by 2030, reaching 5,500 gigawatt-hours capacity. Saudi Arabia responded decisively in 2024 by successfully extracting lithium from oilfield brine runoff, a sustainable new source. Moreover, researchers at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology uncovered groundbreaking methods for extracting lithium directly from seawater. This dual approach demonstrates the Kingdom’s serious commitment to technological leadership in resource extraction.

Massive Economic Contribution

Saudi Arabia strategically focuses mining efforts to transform it into a key economic diversification pillar under Vision 2030, aiming to boost mining’s GDP contribution significantly to US$64 billion by 2030, with its vast mineral wealth, conservatively estimated at US$2.5 trillion, providing immense potential for this growth. During his US trip, Minister Alkhorayef visited Albemarle’s Kings Mountain mine in North Carolina, where he met CEO Kent Masters to discuss concrete technology transfer agreements and promising joint investment opportunities immediately.

The Kings Mountain facility represents a cornerstone of North America’s critical minerals strategy with planned capacity powering over 1.2 million EVs yearly by 2030. Saudi Arabia views such partnerships as essential for rapidly scaling its own lithium capabilities. Therefore, securing access to cutting-edge extraction and processing knowledge is non-negotiable for achieving global leadership.

Consequently, the Kingdom’s focused strategy combines domestic innovation with international collaboration to dominate the lithium market, that positions Saudi Arabia perfectly to supply the world’s clean energy future decisively.
