Argentina to Transfer Israel Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in 2026

Argentine President Javier Milei announced on Wednesday that his country would move its embassy in Israel to from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem by 2026, according to France 24.

“I am proud to announce before you that in 2026 we will make effective the move of our embassy to the city of west Jerusalem, as we promised,” Milei said during an official state visit to Israel.

This move came after several countries, such as the United States, Paraguay, Guatemala and Kosovo, have already moved their embassies to Jerusalem.

During his visit, Milei expressed full support to Israel. “As a nation, we want to stand firm alongside you as you go through these dark days, we will not yield to criticism resulting from cowardice or complicity with barbarism,” he said on Tuesday during a meeting with Israeli President Isaac Herzog.

Since 1967, Israel has occupied east Jerusalem and annexed it. Such a move was not recognized by the international community. Consequently, Israel considered the city as its capital, while Palestinians are determined that east Jerusalem would be the capital of a future Palestinian state.

In order to avoid interfering with negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians, most countries have located their foreign embassies to Israel in the coastal hub city of Tel Aviv.

US President Donald Trump unilaterally recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital in 2017. The decision sparked anger among Palestinians and disapproval in the international community. However, the US officially moved its embassy to Jerusalem in May 2018.
