Japan’s Kawasaki Frontale defied expectations by defeating Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr 3-2 in the AFC Champions League Elite semi-finals on Wednesday. The underdog J-League side secured their first-ever final berth, overcoming Al-Nassr’s star-studded lineup in a dramatic Jeddah showdown.
Al-Nassr captain Cristiano Ronaldo endured a night of near-misses, striking the post with a first-half header and squandering a late golden chance. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner, still trophyless in Saudi Arabia, exited the pitch visibly disappointed as Kawasaki celebrated.
Kawasaki Frontale seized control early when Tatsuya Ito volleyed a spectacular 10th-minute opener from 20 yards. Despite Sadio Mané’s deflected 28th-minute equalizer, Yuto Ozeki restored Kawasaki’s lead before halftime after capitalizing on a defensive error.
Al-Nassr’s Defensive Woes Seal Their Fate
Stefano Pioli’s Al-Nassr struggled defensively, prompting halftime substitutions including Aymeric Laporte. Kawasaki extended their lead in the 76th minute when Akihiro Ienaga volleyed home after Erison outmuscled Laporte.
Ayman Yahya’s injury-time strike revived Al-Nassr’s hopes, but Jhon Durán wasted a clear chance moments later. Goalkeeper Louis Yamaguchi then denied Ronaldo twice in stoppage time, cementing Kawasaki’s historic victory.
Frontale’s triumph marks their first semi-final success, joining an elite group of Japanese finalists, while Al-Nassr’s trophy drought continues despite Ronaldo and Co.’s star power.
Kawasaki Frontale will now face Al-Ahli in Saturday’s final, aiming to become Japan’s fifth Asian Champions League winner.
