On the occasion of Saudi Green Initiative (SGI) Day, Riyadh’s landmarks, roads and squares glowed in green, in a scene that highlights the city’s commitment to sustainability and its impact on the community’s quality of life and environmental goals.
Saudi Arabia celebrates SGI Day on March 27 each year to foster the culture of sustainability and support national efforts aimed at enhancing vegetation cover and environmental balance, in line with the objectives of Vision 2030.

The green illuminations, launched by the Riyadh Municipality, showcase the scale of environmental transformation in Saudi Arabia as well as the Kingdom’s commitment to sustainable solutions to manage natural resources.
Furthermore, the lights convey a visual narrative of integrated environmental efforts, focusing on resource protection, emission reduction, and social awareness to foster sustainable cities and cement the Kingdom’s leadership in global environmental conservation.
Marking SGI Day 2026, Saudi Arabia unveiled the restoration of one million hectares of degraded land through the National Greening Program, according to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
This remarkable milestone aims to expand vegetation cover, reduce desertification, improve quality of life, and enhance the natural capacity of local environments to adapt to climate change.

Moreover, the Kingdom planted more than 159 million trees over the past year. The environmental achievements also included the birth of Arabian oryx calves for the third year in a row.
Meanwhile, the National Water Efficiency and Conservation Center has reached a daily saving capacity of 120,000 cubic meters of water, with plans to increase this capacity to 300,000 cubic meters.
The Saudi Green Initiative was launched in March 2021 by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to achieve three main targets: to help the Kingdom achieve net-zero emissions by 2060, support its green transformation, and protect land and sea.
