US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced on Friday that Qatar will build an air force facility at Mountain Home Air Base in Idaho that will house F-15 fighter jets and pilots, enhancing military cooperation between the two nations.
The announcement follows President Donald Trump’s recent executive order pledging to defend Qatar against potential attacks, after Israeli air strikes targeted Hamas leaders in Doha, Qatar’s capital.
Hegseth stated, “We’re signing a letter of acceptance to build a Qatari Emiri Air Force facility at the Mountain Home Air Base in Idaho,” during a press conference at the Pentagon, alongside Qatari Defense Minister Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani.
Moreover, Hegseth emphasized that the facility will host a contingent of Qatari F-15s and pilots, noting that this initiative aims to enhance combined training and increase lethality and interoperability. “It’s just another example of our partnership. And I hope you know, your excellency, that you can count on us,” he added.
A History of Cooperation
Mountain Home Air Base currently hosts a fighter jet squadron from Singapore, showcasing its role as a key training site. Hegseth also expressed gratitude to Qatar for its significant role as a mediator in the recent truce and hostage-prisoner swap deal between Israel and Hamas. Additionally, he acknowledged Qatar’s assistance in securing the release of a US citizen from Afghanistan.
The Qatari minister praised the “strong, enduring partnership” and “deep defense relationship” between the two countries. The Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar remains Washington’s largest military facility in the Middle East.
Controversy Surrounding the Deal
Trump’s close relationship with Qatar has raised eyebrows, particularly regarding the gift of a Boeing 747 to be used as Air Force One. Although discussions about the Idaho facility began during the Biden administration, the deal has sparked criticism on social media. Far-right activist Laura Loomer, typically a Trump ally, expressed her discontent, stating, “Never thought I’d see Republicans give terror financing Muslims from Qatar a MILITARY BASE on US soil so they can murder Americans.”
In response to the backlash, Hegseth clarified on social media that Qatar would not have its own base in the United States, reiterating, “We control the existing base, like we do with all partners.”
This agreement marks a significant step in US-Qatar relations, reflecting a commitment to mutual defense and military collaboration. As the facility develops, it will play a crucial role in training Qatari pilots and enhancing regional security.
