Ukraine Targets Russian Drones with Mobile Network Restrictions

Ukraine is considering a strategic move to limit mobile service quality during Russian drone attacks, aiming to prevent the use of mobile networks for coordinating strikes. Chief of the General Staff Andriy Hnatov announced this plan on Sunday, highlighting a new tactic in the ongoing conflict.

Three and a half years into the war, Russia has intensified drone attacks on Ukraine, with recent months seeing an increase in both the technology and the number of drones deployed. These drones target strategic locations and key infrastructure, causing significant damage. Moreover, Russia has enhanced its drone capabilities to maximize the impact of these attacks.

Strategic Restrictions on Mobile Communications

Ukraine plans to restrict the quality of mobile communications in certain areas during these attacks, with Chief of the General Staff Andriy Hnatov explaining this strategy to the Ukrainian online video channel Novyny Live. “This is not a disruption of mobile communications, but rather a restriction on the quality of communications in certain areas,” Hnatov stated. He further clarified, “Like a restriction on 4G and 5G communication, so that the modems they use on their unmanned aerial vehicles cannot access the internet of our communications operators.”

Shutting down high-speed mobile internet is a logical step to combat drones equipped with cameras which transmit images and require a 4G connection to operate effectively. By limiting mobile service quality, Ukraine aims to disrupt the communication channels that these drones rely on. This tactic mirrors Russia’s frequent shutdowns of mobile internet to disrupt Ukrainian drone attacks.

As the conflict continues, both sides are employing advanced technological tactics to gain an edge, as Ukraine’s decision to restrict mobile service quality during drone attacks underscores the evolving nature of modern warfare. This strategic move could significantly impact the effectiveness of Russian drone operations.
