Turkey Eyes Joining Saudi–Pakistan Defence Pact: Report

Turkey actively seeks membership in the landmark Saudi-Pakistan defense pact, Bloomberg reported on Friday citing informed diplomatic sources. Ankara believes its security priorities now significantly align with Riyadh and Islamabad on critical regional issues. This potential trilateral framework could reshape Middle Eastern security architecture through complementary military capabilities.

The three nations are currently engaging in advanced talks, and experts suggest that a formal deal is very likely soon. Turkey possesses the largest military force in NATO after the United States, so its participation could fundamentally shift the regional balance. Consequently, the addition of Turkish military hardware and industrial expertise would create a formidable deterrent against any external security threats.

Last September, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman signed the historic Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement in Riyadh. This pact mandates that any aggression against one state constitutes an attack on both, effectively enhancing their joint military capabilities. Furthermore, the inclusion of Turkey would expand this mutual protection umbrella to include one of Europe’s most capable armies.

Synergies of Power and Technology

Strategists believe the three countries bring unique strengths that complement each other perfectly within a unified and robust military framework. Saudi Arabia provides immense financial clout, Pakistan offers nuclear deterrence and manpower, while Turkey contributes advanced defence manufacturing and combat experience. This synergy allows the member states to reduce their long-standing dependence on Western security guarantees during these highly uncertain times.

Regional conflicts and shifting American priorities are prompting Middle Eastern leaders to develop independent mechanisms for identifying their true friends. Ankara views this pact as a crucial way to strengthen its own security while the reliability of the United States fades. Although official ministries have not yet commented, the strong interest in joint manufacturing facilities signals a deep commitment to cooperation.

Ultimately, this burgeoning alliance represents a proactive step toward self-reliance for the Islamic world’s most influential and powerful military forces.
